A Hidden Gem, Meg Cohen Design Shop

Back in October I posted about a shop I happily stumbled upon while on a quiet street in Soho, the Meg Cohen Design Shop. While there the first time I had the opportunity to meet Meg Cohen herself, so when I knew I was headed back to the Big Apple in February I quickly reached out and she graciously allowed us to come in to talk shop.

Her adorable shop is in its 5th year (quite a milestone for any boutique!) and for any Soho buffs out there, it is in the old Kate Spade space at 59 Thompson Street. Meg’s main work and passion is designing cashmere, which she does for both herself and several others designers including the fabulous Paul Smith.  Each cashmere piece is so soft and luxurious it was hard not to wrap myself up in them right there in the store. But that would be awkward so….

What’s so great about the shop though is that in addition to selling her cashmere, it also serves as her creative outlet. A special spot for her to share collections of vintage finds that she personally hand sources and selects.  You can literally feel the love and thought put behind each individual piece.  One item that I forgot to photograph (go easy on me, it was hard when we were so engrossed in chatting!) are cashmere baby hats that she hand embroiders the initial on.  So sweet and what a baby gift to give that feels just a little more special.

These vintage cuff links from the 20’s and 30’s are all unique and would make the perfect groomsmen gifts.

Light cashmere scarfs that also serve as wraps, sign me up. These are perfect for spring!

Even her display of cheerful coin purses is fun in this great jar.

This is officially on my wish list.  One or two of these vintage bank buildings would look so chic in Floyd’s office.

If you are in the area you should definitely make time to stop by to peruse the shop, or you can find some of her wares here.  And be on the lookout for a great Meg Cohen giveaway coming later this Spring!

Oh how I wish I was anywhere near the area. You of course had me at vintage 🙂 Those bank buildings, heart be still. I’ve never seen anything like them. My father worked for a bank most of my life, he would get a kick of them.

It’s amazing all the little hidden gems that exist in the city! And like you said, 5 years still open (even with the horrible economy) is no easy feat! Must be a testament to the uniquess and quality of the items in her store!
