Havertys Home Fashion Workshop

As you know, my partner in crime, Megan, is our resident décor expert. That doesn’t mean to say I don’t love pouring over home Pinterest boards as much as she does, but decorating just comes more naturally to her. I’ve made a few changes here and there, like switching out bed linens and throw pillows, but I haven’t really done any hard core redecorating other than the kids’ rooms since we moved into our home nearly five years ago.

I was super excited to attend Havertys Home Fashion Workshop to see if I could pick up some good tips to help me update our home a little. I still like the colors I chose to use throughout my home, but I’m growing a bit bored with looking at the same things all the time. I think even just a few minor changes would be refreshing!

I arrived at my local Havertys in Tampa on North Dale Mabry on a lovely Saturday morning and was greeted by friendly staff members and a breakfast spread. I, of course, dug into the coffee right away. Haha! While we waited for all the attendees to arrive, the sales consultant who led the workshop, Jeanna Vinai, chatted with us about our personal décor needs and even offered some tips, like checking out local consignment shops for unique lighting options.

The topic for this particular workshop was the accent piece. Havertys has some gorgeous accent pieces available in their A La Carte line. Jeanna focused on adding accent pieces to spaces like the living room, the bedroom and little unused spaces that you may not know what to do with like the space under the stairs. For example, perhaps you have a small nook outside your bedroom. Adding a small Parsons chair and a side table would make nice use of that space. Plus, a Parsons chair can be easily transported to any area of your home where you may need extra seating.

Jeanna recommended only purchasing accent pieces that you can actually use for the long haul. Multi-purpose pieces that provide extra storage, for instance, can give you the best of both worlds when it comes to form and function! A cool trunk placed at the foot of your bed can store knitwear or can be a home for your child’s toys in a playroom. A writing desk can be used as a place to work or as a vanity in your bedroom. Using a console instead of a traditional hutch as a tv stand has a more updated feel, but still offers the storage options you probably need in a family room.

Another important element to pay attention to when it comes to decorating with accent pieces is scale. Using mismatched side tables next to your bed as nightstands can look fabulous, but make sure the two pieces aren’t too far off from each other in terms of scale or your space might look unbalanced. I’m so ready to trade in my boring old matching nightstands for pieces that are more interesting. I’m not a fan of the matchy-matchy look when it comes to my personal style, so why should I use it in my home?

As far as smaller accent pieces go, something like a mirrored tray topped with a small floral arrangement or a stack of decorative boxes to give a lamp some height are fun ways to add a little extra something special to your space. Jeanna also suggested using a pile of books. I’m always looking for new ways to incorporate my book collection into my décor, so I particularly loved that idea!

I enjoyed my Havertys Fashion Workshop experience so much that I can’t wait to go to the next one! It will be focusing on color trends. What happens on the runways definitely inspires home design, so I’m excited to see their suggestions for inserting spring’s color trends into my home. I hope you’ll join me at the upcoming workshops. Below you’ll find the dates and topics, so you can mark your calendars:
