Graduating My Beauty Routine

Who doesn’t love looking and reminiscing at old photos of themselves, family and friends? In a burst of spring-cleaning, I recently found a box of old photos including these gems from when Kristin and I graduated high school. Talk about #TBT! It was such a special time in our lives and looking back we really were young and happy.

When I think about who I was at that time, I basically feel the same but now with even more confidence. Back then, I was more concerned about following what I thought were the beauty rules and musts and was afraid to really experiment with my look or try out new trends. I also didn’t use nearly enough sunscreen. Can I go back in time and yell at myself for that one?!

Now I have a much more carefree spirit and confidence when it comes to trying out new looks. It’s funny how the older I get, the more playful I feel. Here are a few beauty routine tips I would go back and tell myself, or any new graduates today.

1. Try out and use more hair products! I’ve found that over time good products really make a difference for styling my hair type. Right now, I’m loving this Toni & Guy shampoo and Umberto conditioning spray. I use a lot of heat on my hair, so protecting it with a conditioning spray really helps. I also like to give my hairdryer a time out. Once a week or so, I opt for air-drying it into a more playful beachy waves vibe. Products like the Toni & Guy sea salt spray help a lot for my texture. I wish back then I had the confidence to try more products out on my locks!

2. All eyeliner doesn’t have to be black. I still struggle with this one. I love black eyeliner. And trying a new color out can be scary. But I promise the more you practice and experiment with fun eye make-up, the easier it gets! I just tried CopperGlow by Pixi and I’m loving the change.

3. Don’t take yourself so seriously, have fun! Luckily the past several years have given us all the freedom to be more playful with our nail and lip colors. There are so many great colors available! For me, summer is a great time to try nail and lip colors outside of my normal zone. Bright blues and oranges are so vibrant and using them makes me feel energetic too. This essie “naughty nautical” is so perfect for the beach! But hey grads, just make sure not to go too crazy for an interview!

And if you’re like me, you love shopping in the beauty section at Target. There is such a great accessible selection, which makes trying a new look a lot less intimidating. Let’s hear it for #TargetStyle! Here are a few products that I picked up at my local Target that have been fun additions to my normal routine.

I have looked the same since high school with the exception that I straightened my curls.

I wore much more makeup then then I do now–actually I rarely wear it anymore. It has to be a pretty special occasion to get me to have my hair done and put makeup on–or even get a manicure or pedicure. They didn’t know about sunscreen when I was younger———-

My beauty routine could use some time in an institution of higher learning. I need to be more willing to experiment.

I’ve always been stuck in the “black” routine too. I should try a few new colors around the eyes as well!
