I didn’t realize just how busy and stressed out we had become. The winter weather and work had kind of crept up on us and Jake (6) and Max (3) were feeling it too. The cure? A surprise family day spent at Kings Dominion. (Side note: Kings Dominion is offering complimentary admission for kids 5 and under all 2018 season!)
As a family we love amusement parks and a little adventure. The night before I told them they needed a good night sleep. We were going somewhere top secret the next day. We all got in the car and when I turned around in the front seat to tell the news the squeals of delight could have been heard for miles. “We were headed to Kings Dominion! With Rides! And Ice Cream! And REAL Roller Coasters!” The joy in telling them the surprise was a moment I will never forget.
We arrived on a gorgeous Saturday and we made a family (ok Mom and Dad) rule. No phones other than for picture taking. We were officially off the work clock and ready for fun! I checked out the map and decided we should start off at Planet Snoopy. Wow! This area was HUGE! It was perfect for both kids to ride several rides together. They loved it all and they had just enough thrill to satisfy my three-year-old. From Sally’s Sea Plane to Joe Cool’s Driving School they loved playing and riding in this area for hours!
Another favorite was the entertainment. They loved both the Charlie Brown’s Jungle Journey character performance and the festive band that roamed the streets. Both of these proved to be great breaks for all.
And speaking of breaks. When we needed to stop all the fun from rides to eat, there were so many family friendly options. From Chick-fil-a to Sweet Frog, my kids had plenty of delicious and familiar options despite the fact that they can be pretty selective. No food meltdowns made this mama a happy camper! Oh and I LOVED the fancy funnel cakes. Protip: Make sure to try the S’mores version at the Inferno Funnel Cake!
In addition to having so much for Max, even at age six, Jake also got to do some “big kid” experiences. He won a giant stuffed animal playing a fun squirt game and felt like the king of the park! You should have seen him strut with that thing, ha! He also rode the giant Americana Ferris wheel and experienced the Woodstock Express roller coaster from the front row with Dad. He hasn’t stopped talking about it! Mom even got cool points for taking him on the Flying Ace. I may have squeezed my eyes shut, shhh don’t tell. He still thinks I’m brave!
I was so impressed by just how much there was to do at Kings Dominion for all of us. Even more impressive is how it connected us as a family. At one point, as I was flying through the air on the Linus Launcher with Jake at my side. When the ride was over he came over and gave me a hug and said, “I love when you laugh Mommy. When you laugh like that it makes me smile!” Sure you can tell by the smiles in the pictures. But that’s when I really knew that our family day had been a true success. We will definitely be making another trip back this summer.
Kings Dominion offers more than just rides. With Soak City and a variety of ongoing entertainment and events, there is always something exciting happening at the park.
