Things to Do in North Georgia

Have you ever visited North Georgia? If not, it’s high time you plan a trip and I’m going to share some of my favorite things to do in North Georgia with you today. You see, I’ve been visiting the Blue Ridge Mountains area of North Georgia for the better part of a decade. My family goes several times a year, and while we definitely have our tried and true favorite things to do in North Georgia, we also try to add something new to the list each and every time we go! That’s the fun of travel right? Exploring new sights, even in places you thought you knew like the back of your hand? At this point I think I could drive up and down those mountain roads blindfolded. Ok, ok. Let’s not get crazy, maybe not blindfolded. I might have to peek. Haha!

Seriously though, we keep going back to our favorite mountain haunts, not only because our family’s vacation home is up there, but because North Georgia is like a second home to us. They know and remember us in our favorite shops and restaurants year after year. You can’t beat that kind of familiarity. I promise if you decide to plan your own North Georgia trip, you’ll want to go back again and again too. On that note…Are you ready to learn about some fabulous things to do in North Georgia?! They’re all within driveable distance to Clayton, Ga, our mountain vacay “home base.” After this latest trip, I do believe I have some new favorites that we’ll be returning to again in the fall! So, strap in…It’s time to learn about some of the best things to do in North Georgia!

Downtown Clayton: The historic downtown area of Clayton, GA is my very favorite place to spend time, aside from hiking (more on that later). My ideal day in downtown Clayton starts with a coffee at White Birch Provisions. The kids love this gorgeous rustic gourmet coffee shop as much as the ‘rents. They have a juice while we sip on cappuccinos or a nice iced coffee. Ahhh, bliss. Next, we’ll do a little shopping at Treehouse on Main (where you’ll find the cutest boutique clothing finds, as well as super chic home decor and furniture) and Christmas & More (you’ll want to pic up a memory ornament and maybe even some new holiday decorations, I always manage to find both). I never leave town without saying hi to my ladies Devin and Crystal…or picking up some must-haves for my wardrobe and home! And then I’ll hit up Wander North Georgia for outdoor living scores and Indigo for more fashion finds.. And finally, maybe I’ll stop at the Universal Joint for a delish Southwestern fare lunch.

Hiking Tallulah Gorge: If your family is at all into the great outdoors, this is a don’t miss. You’ll find both beginner and more advanced hikes, so you can customize your experience based on the level of hiking you’re interested in on they day you visit. *Make sure you have cash on hand so you can pay the parks department to park. Trust me…The nominal fee is well worth the incredible views you’re going to come across. The gorge alone is breathtaking, as are the woods you’ll hike enjoy along the way! My kids have literally been doing this hike since they were toddlers. We have such a blast, we usually try to pay Tallulah a visit at least a couple of times during our trip!

12 Spies Vineyard:  Remember when I said we try to do something new every time we visit North Georgia, well we found this little gem last summer and we instantly fell in love. Not only is the Revelation Red our go-to red now, but the view from the covered deck can’t be beat. There is nothing quite as relaxing as sipping on a delicious glass of wine with your honey while you watch your kids play in the field at the foot of a mountain. Sigh. *They also have a special reserve Merlot, called Angel Wings, that will make even the most hard-core merlot hater (ahem me) change her tune.

Things to Do with Kids in North Georgia

Goats on the Roof: When you’re on vacay, you have to do something kitchy right? Well, Goats on the Roof is just kitchy enough to be darn cute. They, of course, have a slew of adorable goats, but they also have a playground so fun I have to drag my kids off of it, homemade fudge and even gem mining. It’s usually the first thing we do when once we get settled. And you’ll usually find us feeding those sweet little goats more than once. I bet you’ll find yourself doing the same thing if you stop by!

Hillside Orchard Farms: Another favorite of the kids is “the farm” as they call it. Hillside Orchard Farms is a family run farm that offers everything from blackberry and apple picking, to hay rides and even a corn maze (depending on what time of year you visit). And I can’t forget the animals. My kids can’t get enough of the donkeys, chickens, pigs, goats (yep, more goats) and more! They also have a, wait for it, playground. Every parent knows you need a couple good playgrounds that you can let the kids run out all that energy they forever have on. Am I right?! Grab yourself a cold drink from the general store and let the kids play away while you enjoy the charming surroundings!
