How to Update Your Guest Room On a Budget

Who wants to know how to update your guest room on a budget? As you probably know, we moved into a new home last year. After the grueling selling/buying process, we then focused on acclimating our kids to a new school and neighborhood. So, we put some of the house projects we thought we would do right away on the back burner. We bought a bit of a fixer upper…and you know what that means…projects galore! Our home has amazing bones, but mostly original finishes. It needs new flooring, window coverings, counters…the works! Now that we’ve lived here a year and done a good amount of work on the outside curb appeal, we’re finally ready to tackle some of those inside projects like window coverings…

How to Update Your Guest Room On a Budget

ALL our windows had ancient, mostly broken, blinds covering them. And considering that you see three prominent windows from the street, our old girl didn’t look as pretty from the outside as she could and that goes double for the inside. I mean some of the blinds were being held together by tape. GASP! Yeah, it was time for an upgrade. Thank goodness for 3 Day Blinds! They sure came to the rescue! I’ve been working with them on updating the window coverings in our living/dining room (more on that coming, so stay tuned) and our guest room. The process has been absolutely seamless from the in home consultation to the installation. I can’t say enough about the customer service or quality of the product.

The Best Window Coverings for a Guest Room

So, let’s talk about that guest room. It was rather sad and certainly not the cheerful space I had envisioned when I was daydreaming about having a guest room before we moved. Once I saw our new window coverings installed, I knew they needed a proper room to live in. We went with cellular shades for a soft, calming effect and they turned out just beautiful! Light filters in through them in such a lovely way, I have no doubt that our next guest will have a very pleasant waking up experience. Before we talk about how I made my guest room guest worthy, let’s first talk about those shades.

Why 3 Day Blinds

cellular shades

My 3 Day Blinds design consultant, Lisa, suggested cellular shades after doing a walk through of my home and really getting a feel for what I wanted from the space. I shared that I  was hoping to highlight the natural light in our home and she thought the cellular shades would be a nice complement to that. She really took the time to hone in on my aesthetic and needs and helped me select the best window covering, as well as its color, for my space. After settling on a crisp white shade and seeing how fresh and light the cellular shades looked in our guest room, I decided to continue on with the white theme…And I didn’t have to wait long to make my decorating decision thanks to 3 Day Blinds’ quick turn around. Once the installers came to measure my windows, the shades were installed very quickly.

Like I mentioned, inspired by our white cellular shades, we painted the walls a crisp white. The best part about starting with white is that you can pair nearly any color with it. I found some artwork that I really liked and chose my accent colors based on that. Pops of navy and pink really pop against all that white. A navy throw at the foot of the bed, along with navy shams and a boho chic throw pillow add visual interest as do fresh flowers and reading materials displayed on an accent table. I think I spent less than $200 on all the decor elements thanks to discount home decor stores and shopping my own garage. Bwah! How’s that for how to update your guest room on a budget?!

  1. I love that room and the window treatments are so nice and so custom made. .We have a guest in our house now an exchange student and we made it comfortable but not as nice a room as yours

  2. Love your tips! We did practically the same thing last year, moved to a new state, got the kids into a new school, settled in, then prepared our guest room because we did have people come out to visit us. It was really nice creating a space that guests can have that is just theirs when they come to visit. I love the windows in your guest room.
