Charleston and the Wild Dunes Resort

You know how sometimes us girls just need a break from it all? Just some zen time to relax and laugh and forget about all the stress of daily life? We were thrilled to recently get just that with a girls trip to Charleston and the Wild Dunes Resort. It’s safe to say that we fell in love with the resort, and surrounding area, and are now planning on bringing back our families in the future. What a perfect spot for a group vacation.

Boardwalk Inn SignFirst lets talk about the Wild Dunes Resort. If you’ve never visited this special place, it’s about 30 minutes from downtown Charleston in an area called Isle of Palms, South Carolina. The Wild Dunes Resort has everything you need to fully relax and unwind. It includes The Boardwalk Inn where we stayed, condos and house rentals of all sizes so you can choose which option is right for your trip. Our room was really nice, spacious and had a great bathroom (import with two of us doing make-up!)!

The resort area includes a gorgeous beach, several pools, restaurants, spa, fitness center, golf course and more. When we say there is enough to keep everyone in your party thrilled and happy we mean it! The list of kids activities alone is staggering! And the staff has several activity suggestions that they are happy to arrange for you in advance.

Once we checked in we grabbed coffee and headed out to explore the property. Everything was meticulously maintained and had a casual Americana vibe to it. The beach was really wide and quiet. It felt like an unspoiled treasure. The sand was that awesome hard beach sand that is easy to take long walks on. And it’s just mere steps from the Beachside Burgers and Bar restaurant and family pools. How ideal is that!?! That evening we caught up over a delicious dinner and wine at the on site restaurant, Coastal Provisions. I’m still dreaming of those brussel sprouts. Mmmmmm. What a lovely night!

More Girls’ Getaway Fun

One of the real treats of our girls weekend was doing an ironworking class. Yep you heard me correctly. We signed up through the hotel staff to take an on site ironworking class with Pirate’s Forge. James the owner and teacher was so fun! He taught us this interesting craft in such an accessible lighthearted way. We truly fell in love with this art as we crafted our own iron roses. What a unique experience while on vacation!

And of course, after all that ironwork what better way to cool off than with frozen drinks poolside at a cabana? Did I mention they have an adults only pool too? Sometimes a break from kids is just what a mom needs to recharge! We had such a blast and can’t wait to meet here at the Wild Dunes Resort again!

Charleston, South Carolina

Isle of Palms is close enough to downtown Charleston that you simply must go spend some time there during your trip. There is something so magical about this historic city and you feel the vibrant energy that literally pulses through the streets the moment you arrive. We immediately feel in love with its charm and are already plotting ways we can justify a quick return.

In fact we adored Charleston so much, we paid downtown a visit more than once during our girls’ getaway. And that’s what I suggest you do if you have room in your schedule…Head downtown for at least two different visits, with two different tracks, the brunch track and the dinner track. I mean everybody plans their vacay around the food and bevs right? I thought so. First up, let’s talk brunch and the inevitable shopping that must follow.

Charleston Streets

Brunch, Shopping And Sightseeing

You can’t visit downtown Charleston without having brunch at 5Church. Not only is the vibe super cool, it’s housed in a refurbished church building, but the food is to die for. Think pitchers of mimosas and fancy farm breakfast sandwiches. We also sampled the smoke salmon salad and there wasn’t a bite left on the plate. Now the food and ambiance alone were enough to bring us back, but the service topped off the experience. Our server, Tony, was attentive without being TOO attentive.

He even told us where we needed to go next after determining that the college kid frequented King Street wasn’t exactly our scene. So, off to East Bay Street we headed. But not before we first stopped at the Charleston City Market.  If you’re the kind of person who likes to bring souvenirs back from your travels, this market is the perfect place to score a handmade find. I came home with the most beautiful hand painted ornament!

Like I mentioned, after our market visit, East Bay Street was next. Tony quite accurately determined it was our vibe. Think grand row houses, hip restaurants and gorgeous water views. We got lost in its beauty. To be fair we did stop for a drink or two (where we found that magical brick wall we mentioned on Instagram) and a sweet treat in the form of the BEST ice cream we’ve ever had at Jeni’s (and worth stopping at King Street for – they have some cute boutiques there too), but for the most part we just wandered around for hours taking in the sights. On a side note, if you’re looking for stellar Insta worthy scenery, Rainbow Row is filled with colorful homes that are just begging to be shot in front of. Hello pretty in pink!

Dinner, Drinks and Rooftops

Now that you’ve had your fill of the sights that brunch and shopping bring you, your next trip into town should include drinks on the roof! Which roof? Take your pick! Charleston is literally FILLED with fun rooftop bars where you’ll get some of the best views of the city. I’m not sure if this is true, but a local told us that you can’t construct buildings that are taller than the church steeples, so when you head up to your chosen rooftop, you’ll find that your view is pretty unobstructed.  You can’t beat watching the sun on the roof of The Vendue. This artsy hotel’s rooftop bar will give you a view of the Holy City that you won’t forget any time soon! And the tasty apps, tastier craft brews and live music certainly put smiles on our faces too!

It’s safe to say that we enjoyed Charleston as much as we did Wild Dunes and the Isle of Palms. It was such a treat being able to experience two very different vibes, from the laid back beach life to a bustling city, all in one trip! With self-care being so important to each of us, taking a break like this for a long weekend is one way we make sure to stay refreshed and ready to care for the others in our lives. We couldn’t have asked for a better spot to really relax and give ourselves that self-care we so need!
