My #BeautyStory with Dove

We all have women in our lives who have inspired us. Sometimes it happens when we don’t even realize it, quietly over the course of years. Whether they are related to us, good friends, work mentors, or noteworthy people we watch from afar, a #BeautyStory from someone we admire can stay with us for a lifetime.

For me, one of these special inspirations was my grandmother. My grandmother Maxine, and baby Max’s namesake, may not have been a beauty queen, but to me she was one of the most beautiful and special people I’ve had the privilege of knowing. She wasn’t one to dole out a ton of advice to me as a child, but instead taught me lessons through spending time with me and encouraging me to do the things I loved which still hold pretty true to this day. Reading, long walks, and going to the beach, all still in my top 10 activities, ha.

Grandma Maxine

One of her life lessons that still resonates with me was that hard work is beautiful.

She wasn’t one to be outspoken or create a stir about it. Instead she believed that women should and could take on doing the things they want and that hard work as a woman was a good thing, not something to shy away from. Before being a “work from home mom” was even a thing, she found a way to do just that. As a mother of three kids, she opened a beauty parlor in her basement and took on clients from a separate entrance while her children were able to be just a room over. Throughout her later years she worked at bakeries and enjoyed that part of her life. I find it encouraging to know that women have been coming up with their own solutions on how to find fulfillment working and taking care of their children for generations and that we are continually making progress on how to facilitate just that.

I was fortunate to grow up in Florida where my grandparents retired and lived about two hours away. This allowed us to visit often for the weekend. They even lived a few miles from the beach, which was a total bonus.

Coming in from the beach all hot and sandy I would head straight to the shower and it’s there that I remember her steadfast use of Dove Beauty Bar. It always felt and smelled so good coming out of the shower a little more sun kissed. I loved that I smelled just like my grandmother Maxine and that my skin was so soft. To this day that is something that stays with me.

Beauty habits like these are often passed down from generation to generation. In fact, a Dove survey finds that most women trust the women in their lives more than celebrities for beauty tips and advice. This survey is part of the new Dove Beauty Stories campaign which encourages women to share their beauty stories to honor the real women who have taught them to live beautifully.

For more Dove Beauty Stories, watch this video below and share your own #BeautyStory to celebrate the real women who have inspired it.

I only hope that I can teach my boys some of the same lessons my grandmother taught me and honor her through my own hard work, that and Dove of course!

Disclosure: We have been compensated by the Motherhood to share our Dove #BeautyStory, however all opinions and thoughts expressed are our own.

Such a beautiful story. I love hearing stories of how women made a living back then. My grandmother was a seamstress. Truly inspiring.

  4. Virginia says mom definitely inspired me. She passed away a few years ago and I kiss her so much. I hope I make my daughter as proud as my mom made me. 🙂
