Summer is all about having fun in my book. Who’s with me? This was my kindergartner’s first year in big kid school and it was definitely an adjustment for both of us…After a busy, and somewhat exhausting school year, I wanted these few months off to be a time when my little dude could simply decompress and enjoy the magic of summertime. That doesn’t mean, however, that I’m ok with the dreaded summer brain drain. It just means I needed to get creative about inserting fun learning opportunities into our day. Thank goodness for Umigo!
Umigo offers free downloadable activities aimed toward the development of math and reasoning skills for elementary school aged children. While they’re educational, they’re designed to make learning easy and FUN! In fact, Umigo has dedicated itself to a summer of learning through their Summer of Umigo program which kicked off on National Summer Learning Day. They believe that hands on, informal learning can really make a difference in a child’s educational progression.
We put Umigo to the test recently and my almost first grader gave it two thumbs up! He was sold with the pizza party fraction focused “appisode.” Haha! While watching Umigo’s educational videos and playing their games, he was thoroughly engaged while learning new skills. As a parent, I couldn’t be more thrilled. And this mama also loves that Umigo’s educational content is aligned with the Common Core Standards for Mathematics. Considering Common Core didn’t exist when I was his age,so this is a great way for me to become better acquainted with it. And I just love that I can help him get a head start on his first grade learning!
So, do you want to prevent the summer slide from happening in your house? I know you do! I urge you to share Umigo’s fun learning activities with your own kiddos! Did I mention that this site, funded in part by a US Department of Education Ready to Learn grant awarded to WTTW Chicago Public Media, is FREE?!? What better reason to give it a go?
