Have your kids gone back to school yet? Ours started this week and boy this mama tired! Even if you haven’t started, that first day of school is right around the corner. So, it’s definitely time to start talking about back to school supplies. School supply shopping is one thing many of us parents dread come the end of summer. Am I right? Driving around from store to store looking for just the right backpack. It’s, in a word, a chore.

As always, we want to make things easier on you, so I’m sharing a slew of must-have back to school supplies that are sure to delight the kiddos in your house! I’m talking about lunchbox must-haves, first aid kit stuffers, safety supplies and more! Because school year prep involves so much more than pencils and folders. Don’t get me wrong, you’ll still need plenty of those, but the back to school supplies that we’re sharing today go a step beyond your everyday school supplies!

Must-Have Back to School Supplies

Statement backpack…Nothing says statement making more than sequins. I don’t know about your kids, but my daughter can’t get enough of them! There wasn’t a word of complaint about getting up early this week because she knew she had her Mermaid Flip Sequin Backpack from Justice to look forward to packing! Now this isn’t just an all look no substance situation. This backpack has comfy padded straps, a top loop that can hold up to 100 pounds (although no little body needs to tote around that much), and super special loop designed to hold a keychain collection. It’s a great way to let

Reading inspiration… Not all tweens are voracious readers. I was, but my kids need a bit more prodding than I did at their age. A trick that I find that works is getting them excited about a story before they start it. So, I’ll let give them a few new books to choose from so they feel like they’re involved in the process versus just giving them the books they’re assigned at school. Reading for pleasure is something that needs to be encouraged in my experience. In fact, that encouragement has helped my daughter move past her grade’s reading level. So, I urge you to try that tactic if you have a reluctant reader at home too.

New Fall Book Rec

And if you have new middle-schoolers, you just might want to hand them Merci Suarez Changes Gears. It’s a heartwarming story about close-night multi-generational family. Merci’s grandfather has Alzheimers and it delicately explores how that affects Merci and her outlook on life. Exposing kids to complex emotions makes for wonderful teachable moments! And the multicultural and Latino characters offer interwoven Spanish language dialogue too.

First-aid kit stuffers…Never go into a new school year without making sure your your first-aid kit is fully stocked. My sweeties are forever getting boo-boos, so I make sure I have plenty of boo-boo soothers on hand. Me4Kidz has some great options like their portable Medibuddy First-Aid Kit, Little Buddy Anti-Bacterial wipes and Cool it Buddy instant ice packs. They’re great for at home AND on the go use. I even pack some of them in the kids backpacks or give to the teacher for classroom use!

And the same goes for Westcott Kids Jellies Pointed Scissors. The super squishy grip helps little ones control their cutting in comfort. They’re actually the first and only gel-grip scissors for kids. And they can be used by left or right handed kiddos which is great because I have both at home! We keep a pair at the house too. My youngest is a major crafter and these scissors work great on paper, ribbon and the like. I think they were my daughter’s school supplies top pick this year!

Along with your first-aid kit, safety products are a must. Flashlights, namely the Maglite flashlight, are a family favorite and I love that they come in different sizes. The Solitaire® LED Flashlight by Maglite®, for instance, is basically keychain sized. It’s perfect to attach to backpacks or Mom’s purse. And my kids like to keep the Mini Maglite® Pro LED Flashlight by their bed. Take that monster in the closet!

New and Improved Lunches

Lunchbox savers…If I had a dollar for every time a lunch came home uneaten last year, I would have way too much money. After we talked about how blessed we are to have food to eat and that we shouldn’t be wasting it, I decided that I had to change the way I packed their lunches. Perhaps they weren’t staying cold enough. Maybe they needed a gentle reminder to stop talking and start eating.

Freezable Lunch Bags and Freezable Snack Bags certainly solve the cooling issue. You actually freeze the bags overnight and in the morning you basically have a portable fridge to pack lunches in! I mean can you think of anything cooler, pun intended haha, than a freezable lunch bag? And if you also parent picky eaters, the Mod Lunch Box is a game changer too. The leak-resistant dividers keep food and liquids separate. I know I’m not the only mom who’s heard I couldn’t eat this because it touched that right?! This bento style box allows you to customize those lunches so the containers come home good and empty!

Finally, lunchbox notes just got easier with the little books of tear off notes from MyWish4U Lunch Notes from Me! They’re  just what you need to inspire your kid to try their best, face their day with a brave face and, you know, eat. Haha! Head to your local Target to find some to add to your lunch packing arsenal!

So, do you think we covered enough back to school supplies or what?! Happy shopping my friends. Now that I’m a week in, I’m feeling a bit more in control. Here’s to those of you just getting started. You’ll be here soon my friends!
