Update Your Home with Plantation Shutters for the New Year

Unless you built your house from the ground up, the chances are your home needs some updating. And that’s why we’re going to talk about how to update your home with plantation shutters today. Even small projects like updating one well appointed window with new window treatments can make a difference. Anything you can do to make the space seem more modern will only add to its value. Now I know how  the prospect of updating your home can seem overwhelming, especially if there are multiple projects on your list. Trust me. I get it.

You see, about 2.5 years ago we moved into our dream neighborhood, in our dream school district. The house we chose, however, wasn’t the total dream our neighborhood was. It needed some serious work. Pretty much everything you can think of was original. The kitchen, bathrooms, flooring and, you guessed it, the window treatments, were gut jobs. We didn’t let that scare us though. And you shouldn’t let updating fears talk you out of a home with potential either. Location, location, location is a saying for a reason!

If you really fall in love with a house or you really love the fixer upper you’re already in, but you feel like you’re drowning in to dos, never fear. Just take it one step at a time. Make a list of projects that are manageable for you right now and tackle the first thing on the list. I’m not going to lie. I hesitated for a moment when we first saw our current home. I knew it was going to be a a big undertaking, but the inventory was very low in the area we were looking. In the end, we knew where we wanted to be, so we straightened our backs and prepared to enter reno land.

We’ve been walking down that road ever since and one of our favorite homes updates has been installing plantation shutters in our dining and living room space. We worked with 3 Day Blinds on the project and we couldn’t be more thrilled with the final result.  Considering our windows were covered by twenty year old blinds before, the shutters would have been an improvement even if they weren’t totally luxe looking, which they are. Haha! In case you haven’t stopped by in real life, haha, our living room / dining room is a combined space and one of the first rooms you see when you enter our home.  Blinds that were held together by tape just weren’t going to work for this girl.

How to Update Your Home

Clearly, it wasn’t a look that I loved, but those broken down blinds stayed put the first couple of years while we tackled more pressing matters like a hurricane thrashed lawn. Bwah! But when it was time to finally put some energy into that space, we knew that custom plantations shutters were what we wanted to show off the arched windows in the room. Frankly, arches aren’t my favorite, but they’re ALL over Florida. Plus, I’m a if you can’t hide it, flaunt it kinda girl. And custom plantation shutters certainly help flaunt the windows they cover! They flow with their shape and give our arched windows the appearance of features that were meant to be celebrated. That being said, if you’re considering plantation shutters, we all know they’re a healthy expense, so you want to take your time when choosing them, so you really feel good about your choice. Thanks to the free estimate from a professional design consultation that 3 Day Blinds offers, you can’t lose.

Where to Shop for Plantation Shutters

Our consultant was at my home for at least a couple of hours until she had a thorough understanding of our needs. First, we went over my decorating preferences along with my future plans for the space. We hadn’t installed the flooring that is in the space now, so she really had to imagine what our shutters would look like when the space was updated. Once we’d narrowed down the vision we went over the types of shutters that were available (wooden or polymer etc.), colors (you wouldn’t believe how many shades of white there are, bwah) and such. Or did I want to be able to only open half the blinds at a time? It turns out the answer was yes! I love that the shutters in our main window can be half open to prevent the back of the couch fading. I would never have considered that had it not been for our design consultant!

The whole selection process was so seamless. I truly appreciated our consultant’s advice and the time she took with me. She made  sure I was 100% happy with my decision before she even took out her measuring tape. I’ll be talking about the rest of the process, including installation, in a later post, but if you’re thinking about whether plantation shutters are for you, let me put your mind at ease. They ARE! Haha! And 3 Day Blinds is there to make updating your home with plantation shutters easy as pie! They handle everything from the design, to the measuring and even the installation. You just have to worry about those colors I mentioned…but then again, the design consultant can help with that too!

Now that you’ve seen my case for plantation shutters, check out my take on how to update your guest room! As much as I love plantation shutters, there’s something to be said for cellular shades too. They’re totally different looks, yet both fit in seamlessly with so many  different styles of decor! My modern farmhouse vibe,  for example, might not be for you. I could easily see my 3 Day Blinds plantation shutters in a room filled with coastal chic pieces too. Just sayin’! With the new year heading our way, it just may be time for you to give your space the upgrade it deserves!

I’m wondering how easy they are to clean. My wife and I lost our home back in October to a fire, and are rebuilding. I do like these better than your average blinds. I’m forwarding her this post for her thoughts.

I love the look of the plantation shutters. That would be something I would want to do whenever we buy our own home.

These are gorgeous! I’ve always wanted to add plantation shutters, but worried about the cost. I ought to start saving up because they look great!
