Salted Caramel Apple Bars

This salted caramel apple bars recipe will make you want to get in the kitchen to bake right away. It would be delicious as a Thanksgiving dessert or fall treat at any gathering.

With Thanksgiving coming up in a little over a month, I’m in full on recipe collecting mode. Thanksgiving signals the start of the holidays for me and I pretty much bake every weekend from then through the new year. And this year, I feel like getting started a little early. Baking in my kitchen is my happy place after all.  These salted caramel apple bars would make for a perfect Thanksgiving treat, but why wait until then? I can so see us enjoy one while sipping on our coffee after any fall dinner! Who’s with me? Mmmmmm!

It may look like a lot of ingredients, but you can count on just a quick pass at peeling and mixing, then a quick bake in the oven and you’ll be noshing on a delicious caramel apple desert in no time!

Salted Caramel Apple Dessert

Yields: 8×8 pan, 9 servings

INGREDIENTS FOR STREUSEL TOPPING
1/2 cup oats
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) cold butter – cubed
Smuckers salted caramel sauce

INGREDIENTS FOR BOTTOM LAYER
1 cup all purpose flour
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter – melted
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

INGREDIENTS FOR APPLE FILLING
2 large apples (or 4-5 small)
1 teaspoon lemon juice
2 Tablespoons all purpose flour
2 Tablespoons granulated sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

DIRECTIONS FOR STREUSEL TOPPING
1. In a small mixing bowl, add the oats, flour, brown sugar and cinnamon. Using a pastry blender, cut in the chilled butter till the topping resembles coarse crumbs. Set aside.

DIRECTIONS FOR BOTTOM LAYER
1. Preheat oven to 300°. Grease a 8 x 8 pan and set aside.
2. In a medium mixing bowl, add the flour, sugar, and salt. Whisk to combine.
3. Add the melted butter and vanilla. Mix well and press into the bottom of your greased pan.
4. Bake for 15 minutes.
5. Remove from oven and place pan on a wire rack to cool for 20 minutes.
6. Increase oven temperature to 350°.

DIRECTIONS FOR APPLE FILLING
1. Core, peel and slice apples into thin pieces. Add to a large mixing bowl and toss with 1 teaspoon lemon juice.
2. Add the flour, sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Toss to coat evenly and place on top of the cooled bottom layer.
3. Sprinkle with the streusel topping and bake for 30-35 minutes or until the apples are tender and the topping turns golden brown.
4. Remove from oven and cool for 30 minutes. Place in the refrigerator and chill for a minimum of 2 hours.
5. Before serving, cut into bars and drizzle salted caramel sauce over each bar.
6. ENJOY!!
